The year 2009 has come and gone in a flash. The last year has seen a lot of developments around the world. Economic upheavals, wars, volcanoes, coup d’etat, accounting frauds, white-collar crimes, indictments, and so on and so forth. A typical year for some, a momentous year for others. Technology grew by leaps and bounds as compared to previous years. Several new products were launched that incorporated exciting new technologies.

For Xellect IP Solutions, it was a good year. It was a year that began just like any other- tasks requiring to be completed, business to be developed, clients to cater to, clients to woo… Typical start-up business scenario.

In late 2008, Xellect IP Solutions had undertaken a massive task of increasing the IPR awareness to 14 colleges in Karnataka under TEQIP, in order to make the faculty members in these colleges capable of administering a course to engineering students. This was in the form of 3 workshops held at different locations that concluded in Feb 2009.

Besides conducting the course, Xellect IP Solutions’ management, Rachna Singh Puri and Arvind Viswanathan, co-authored a book entitled ‘Practical Approach to Intellectual Property Rights’. As the title suggests, this book provides a simplified view of the topic. Contributions from several other experts in the field were also taken for most of the chapters. The book was published by I.K. International Pvt. Ltd., and was released in late July 2009.

Arvind, the Chief Strategy Officer for Xellect IP Solutions, conducted a detailed analysis of the patents of Wallace Carothers, the intense researcher in Du Pont in the 1930s, and the inventor of Nylon. His analysis culminated in a publication in a peer-reviewed journal World Patent Information, and is titled ‘Wallace Carothers: More than just the inventor of Nylon and Neoprene.’ Here, Arvind concludes that while Carothers is best known for these inventions, his main focus of research was neither of these compounds but polyesters.

In mid-2009, Xellect IP Solutions also expanded to include 2 more people in its team, and moved to locate itself within the premises of Teleradiology Solutions.

Xellect IP Solutions conducted its usual requisite number of training sessions over and above the aforementioned TEQIP training program, that included both awareness sessions and depth related programs. Xellect IP Solutions has always been a willing and able partner to the Women Scientists Scholarship program conducted by PFC-TIFAC, and has conducted sessions in Delhi and their partner organization CCSTDS in Chennai. We have been invited speakers and panellists in several forums, including the IP Day event at SDM College of Engineering, Dharwad; IP Awareness workshop at Madurai Kamaraj University, Madurai; IP Workshop at Gulbarga, and so on. We have also been training partners for select MNCs, R&D organizations, other IP Service firms, and individuals.

Besides these activities, Xellect IP Solutions has catered to clients in a wide variety of technical domains in a very satisfactory manner. Patent drafting assignments, spanning technology domains such as Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electronics, Electrical Engineering, Software, Chemistry, and Medical Diagnostic Devices, to name a few. Similarly, patent analysis also spanned varied and diverse technological fields, providing a wide variety of reports for end users.

One unique offering that Xellect IP Solutions has provided was the Strategic support for clients. This included not only identifying IPRs hidden within the organization and providing guidance and support in actually procuring and utilizing the IPRs, but also in setting up internal processes for the organization to implement to mine and unearth potential IPRs, and assisting them with the appropriate agreements in place for any joint development and related work assignments. A part of this effort also included commercialization effort for select patented technologies. Such offerings were well-appreciated by all the benefiting organizations. This further resulted in us being referred to other potentially interested clients.

To do this, besides delivering the work products as required by the clients, we have been actively providing value-added advice that has been at the least warmly regarded, and generally, well received and looked forward to.

Over all, it has been a busy year in 2009 for Xellect IP Solutions, but as always, we keep up our smile, because we like it busy, and we like what we are doing.
